Who We Are
Cindy (Stein) Gershen opened the Sunrise Cafe & Bakery on South California Blvd. in Walnut Creek in 1981, baking her own breads and pastries, and is still the owner today. Her son, Joe Stein, now runs most of the "day to day" operations, but keeps his mom by his side for support and inspiration. These days, Cindy spends most of her time and energy on spearheading the Walnut Creek Healthy Restaurant Association, the Wellness City Challenge and sits on the boards of several community and non-profit organizations.
Our cafe at 1355 S. California has reopened as "Cuz’nz BBQ"! Joe and his cousin, Tanya Pearce, have combined their talents create a new menu to showcase Tanya’s mouth-watering barbecue recipes. It has a great new look, too! Please visit us to try out the ribs, brisket or chicken, along with more than a dozen side options and lots of delicious desserts, including some of our Sunrise favorites. As before, meals are can be enjoyed in the dining room, on the patio or to go. The hours are currently 11:00 am – 8:00 pm daily.
We are also excited to announce that the City of Walnut Creek has asked us to operate the banquet facilities and grill at Boundary Oak on an interim basis until studies for the long-term plans are completed. Sunrise Bistro is in the Main Street Plaza on Botelho Drive. This is our full-service restaurant open for breakfast and lunch daily. We have patio dining and also offer a bar menu. Take-out orders are welcome. There is a beautiful Banquet Room that can be reserved for private parties of 15 to 40 guests. The Bistro is also available for private evening parties of up to 100 guests.
Sunrise Catering prepares everything from cold buffets and box lunches to full-scale dinners and hors d’oeuvre receptions. We also offer outstanding breakfasts – hot or cold—delivered to your office or event, featuring our fresh-baked pastries. (We’ve even catered breakfast at Tiffany’s!) We deliver within the Tri-Valley area, and will go anywhere in the Bay Area under appropriate circumstances.
While we specialize in simple and straightforward "Bistro Catering" we are also highly regarded at the other end of the spectrum. We have catered Save Mt. Diablo’s annual "Moonlight on the Mountain" fundraiser since its inception in 2002, serving fabulous steak dinners to over 450 guests at a time outdoors on Mt. Diablo. We are preferred caterers for the Lesher Regional Center for the Arts, the Gardens at Heather Farm and Temple Isaiah, among other venues.
